2007-2008
Holy Communion for
Younger Children
The practice of the Diocese of Connecticut is to invite all Baptized
persons, regardless of age, to receive Holy Communion. Instruction for
children and families is offered every other fall (the next time being
October 2008). If you have questions about your child receiving Holy
Communion, please speak to the clergy or to Margaret Smith, Director of
Religious Education. Child-friendly booklets about Holy Communion are
available for all children.
Confirmation in the
Episcopal Church
Classes for youth and
adults who wish to become confirmed in the Episcopal Church are offered
in the winter. Teens prepare for confirmation through the Sunday
morning J2A classes (9:30-10:15 a.m.), February 3 - March 16. An
opportunity for instruction will be made available in March for adults
who wish to be confirmed. The bishop administers confirmation at Christ
Church Cathedral, Hartford on Easter Eve, March 22 at 8 p.m.
Newcomers
We welcome all visitors and newcomers to St. John’s and invite you
to participate fully in all church programs and educational offerings.
Twice each year a newcomers’ dinner is offered to welcome newcomers to
St. John’s. Dinners this year are scheduled for Monday, October 15 and
Monday, April 14.
Bible Studies
Two early morning Bible studies are offered this year, each of five
weeks, both on Mondays from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. October 15 - November 12:
The Fifth Gospel, (The Letter to the Hebrews); and April 14 - May
12: Deuteronomy. No special preparation is required; simply join
us and bring a friend. Coffee is provided.
Faithworks
Gather with fellow
parishioners to talk about faith and daily living. Beginning in
October, on the first Wednesday of every month, there will be open
discussion on a variety of spiritual topics from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in
the reception room.
Youth and Adult Choirs
The choirs provide music for the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service as well
as other times throughout the year. Admission to the Adult Choir is by
audition with the Organist Choirmaster, Ralph Valentine. The Youth
Choir, for children 8 and older, is under the direction of Jane
Penfield. The Youth Choir is an affiliate of the Royal School of Church
Music. Rehearsals for both choirs are Wednesday evenings: 6:15 - 7:30
for the Youth Choir; 7:30 - 9 for the Adult Choir.
